Direct nickel plating on aluminum as a base

NICAL®

Due to its natural oxide layer, aluminum cannot be reliably coated with a metallic layer without further processing. NICAL® was developed to directly nickel-plate aluminum, thereby creating a durable foundation for further functional coating systems. The process combines the advantages of aluminum as a lightweight material with the technical properties of metallic surfaces.

Procedure at a glance

NICAL®

NICAL® is a specially developed process for the direct nickel plating of aluminum. Since aluminum immediately forms a natural oxide layer on its surface, achieving a reliable metallic coating is technically challenging. NICAL® addresses this very issue and creates a durable foundation for nickel and other functional coating systems. This process makes it possible to impart specific surface properties to aluminum components—for example, electrical conductivity, EMC shielding, or other electroplated coatings.
